The author is a retired magistrate/coroner/barrister who lives in Sydney with his wife. He has three adult daughters.
Apart from his interest in writing, he has lately become enamoured with the frustrating pastime of competition golf. He also swims laps to battle an increasing waistline.
Having spent most of his working life in and out of courtrooms, he has always been an ardent fan of courtroom dramas, both in film and novel form. Classics such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Witness for the Prosecution, and Anatomy of a Murder are not only his favourites, but also perfect examples of the enduring fascination most everyone has with this genre. At his bench farewell the Chief Magistrate commented that after more than twenty years on the bench, he was regarded as being (amongst other qualities) contemplative, plain-talking and laconic. Not such bad attributes for a struggling writer.
“A young woman is quickly and dispassionately killed with a single blow. Thus begins The Improbable Advocate, an Australian courtroom thriller by retired Sydney barrister, magistrate, and coroner A.T.Cullen.
Cullen tells the tensely constructed story of Matthew Jameson, a young ex-football player turner criminal-defence lawyer out of place in a large, stuffy law firm in Sydney in 1966. His colleagues do not appreciate his efforts, and neither do some of his clients. Nevertheless, he is suddenly thrust into a central role defending a prominent politician accused of murdering the young woman whose demise begins the novel. When the chief barrister is … Jameson is thrown into the breach to save the day.
Cullen writes well and the action and dialogue move along at a steady and lively pace. Unlike some first-time novelists, Cullen manages to keep himself out of the narrative and allows his characters to carry the load. The author excels at creating the ethical and tactical dilemmas faced by defence attorneys.”
Overall, there is no doubt a jury would deliver a unanimous favourable verdict on The Improbable Advocate.

THE ANCIENT CRAFT was released in January, 2020, and is set ten years after the first novel, containing most of the original characters who now face new challenges with a murder trial as well as a commercial drug supply trial.
Matthew Jameson is admitted to the bar as a barrister as his old mentor,Oscar, eases into retirement, but his personal life is no more settled than earlier, and his future as a lawyer is once again in peril. I trust that readers will enjoy the continuing saga.
